Overview
The brain is very susceptible to damage after trauma.
Many of the symptoms experienced after brain injury could arise from damage to important brain structures such as the pituitary and the hypothalamus. These brain areas are vital for regulation and release of hormones such as thyroxine, adrenal steroids, ovarian/testicular hormones, growth hormone, and others.
Complaints after brain injury such as fatigue, problems with appetite and satiety, sexual function, hair loss, weight gain or loss, personality change, heat or cold intolerance, may be the result of endocrinological dysfunction.
A neuropsychiatrist often signposts for further investigation and management of these problems.
